Growing up, I heard about the life of Nelson Mandela. Although movies have been made showing his life I have not seem them. Hearing about Invictus, it renewed and I was determined to watch it.
The movie is about Nelson Mandela and his struggles to unite South Africa after apartheid. Apartheid according to Wikipedia was a system of legal racial segregation enforced by the National Party government in South Africa between 1948 and 1994, under which the rights of the majority black inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and minority rule by white was maintained. Invictus documents Mandela early in his Presidency with aggressive measures to inspire and unite the country around the country’s rugby team and their quest to win the tournament.

The lead actors in the movie Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon were outstanding. To think that these actors are American and were able to reproduce the respective South African accents (both black and white) with such clarity speaks to their depth as actors and their ability to tell the story. That is one thing you have to take away from the movie Invictus. The acting was classy and they did bring the story to live.
The cinematography of the movie was awesome. The camera angles showed throughout the movie were from a spectator’s view at times – as if it were an eyewitness capturing an event. This may have been deliberate because it allowed the viewer to be captivated. If you watch the movie there is a particular scene with an aircraft that is simply fantastic.

Invictus also attempted to show different views from South Africa. You saw the metropolitan areas and we could not escape from the more destitute areas – what I call the face of Africa. It was refreshing to see the developed areas. It actually has inspired me to visit South Africa – only if I could afford it. I have watched many events from South Africa and the packaged televised programs make you want to wake up there. South Africa is big on fashion and I just hope the country continues to show and inspire other African nations to do well. If you haven’t heard, South Africa will host 2010 World Cup, look forward to a world class event as they are capable to deliver just that.
Invictus is big on rugby, big on acting, big on Mandela but Invictus tackles issues that many countries still face today. There is a point in the movie where it shows thousands of people in long lines waiting to cast their votes. Of course, this would be the first time they would be voting since black people were not allowed to participate in elections. It brought back memories of Obama’s campaign and the energy that captivated the entire country and indeed the world. Racism is front and centre in Invictus. It goes to show how divided the country was. One particular scene from the movie shows the new security detail for Mandela not wanting to accept white security guards for the new President because of the effects of apartheid.

This movie is inspiring to watch, it will make you cry and it will make you hungry for something better. It is definitely a movie that will leave you satisfied and wanting more.

Go see Invictus today! I give it 5 out of 5. I love a good drama.

Definitely on our “to see” list.
Yeah. As I said you won’t regret it.
Hey Corve
Just stopped by to wish you a very happy new year!

You did an incredible review, Corve. Unfortunately, since the San Francisco budget cuts eliminated my forensic nursing position of 21 years and forced my retirement, I have to wait for movies to come out on Netflix. I have been a fan of Morgan Freeman forever ( he and I are about the same age ) – though I like Matt Damon as well – thanks for looking at my blog!
i love your blog-will return soon.
great review. i really want to see this movie…so glad it got a good review….happy new year!
Happy New Year Brial Miller
You need to see this movie. It’s great.
I’m so glad you got a chance to see it. I actually loved it enough to see it three times. I have always been a big Nelson Mandela fan and supporter since my elementary school days. See there was a plus to growing up in Compton, those predominantly Black teachers taught me things I would have NEVER learned in another school. By the time I got to Middle School in a mixed more affluent school (I was bused), not even my teachers were aware of the tragedies of apartheid or for that matter, they didn’t know ANYTHING about rugby. It is a very POWERFUL movie and I am glad you enjoyed it just as much as I did.
Happy New Year Corve! Looking forward to another year of getting to know your thoughts.
Happy New Year May.
I can believe you saw the movie. You may be viewing it too many time. 3x. You really love it. I love it – I can see myself watching it again. It was that satisfying.
Thank you for the excellent review I have seen the trailers on TV and I really want to watch this movie and after reading your review makes me want to see it even more
Thanks so much Midwest Mom.
I’m so glad to read your review. We haven’t read anything about it yet or seen trailers, but it’s been on our to see list as well. We love Morgan Freeman so I am looking forward to his performance as Mandela. Happy New Year
I hope you see it soon. It’s a lovely movie.
When I think of Mandela, I can’t get over that he was imprisoned for 27 years. Twenty-seven years was a very long time.
It was really a sad time for Mandela. The movie explores his emotions and actually visits the cell which can be painful to watch.
good morning and Happy New Year Corve!
Happy New Year Steve
Excellent review! I’m looking forward to this one!
Cool!
Thanks, this looks like a good movie, one of the few I’m interested in seeing this season. I may wait for DVD though (I’m so cheap).
My husband and I took a month-long class back in 1980 in LA, and about 30 South Africans – blacks, whites and coloreds – also attended. It was an amazing chance to witness firsthand the conversation among the dominant groups in that country, and such deep complications, which I can’t begin to understand or know.
what an experience Ruth? The South Africans were in a mess.
I didn’t know that this was that the story was about. I will definitely love to watch this! Just gotta wait for DVD because I have kids at home and can’t take them to the theatres for a movie like this.
That’s understandable
This looks like a good movie and I’ll probably catch it on video.
Thanks for stopping by to visit Dennis! It takes a while to get use to his spelling choices but it gets easier eventually.
I will get used to it soon. I will return lol
Great blog – excellent English too – u make it look easy lol
It was interesting going to SA a few years after apartheid ended and seeing the shack townships near cape town. Very humbling.
I would love to visit that place. I will be emotional and cry but it is so beautiful from the images you see. This movie Invictus makes it look great as well. they are big on fashion which would be lovely to experience
Morgan Freeman is one of the top three African American actors of all times, thats my opinion.
