I am 23 today, January 30th. I am excited, I just opened my gifts – hangover (joke) and now I am off to church to celebrate – hope the music is great.

Last night I had a blast – a party with my closest friends (and of course those friends brought guests – not a lot).

We had a ball, we danced, we laughed and we celebrated. So I continue today and hope my day will end on a high.

Of course Beyonce singing Happy Birthday to me would be a dream. But for now I will enjoy the video below.

Be YOU – Don’t Imitate

You have studied hard for your examination and there beside you is someone who is intent on copying your answers. What do you do? It may be a great feeling for those who see it as helping out another but dishonesty cannot be rewarded. In Jamaica, the entertainers here have a bad habit or it may be a culture where they imitate popular songs internationally and write lyrics to make it their own with the same mix. A more recent case saw one of Jamaica’s dancehall artistes Vybz Kartel and Spice with a song called Ramping Shop (very sexual I might add) copying Neyo’s Miss Independent Woman. Only when the song was very popular internationally did Neyo file papers to stop these unscrupulous artistes from profiting from his work. Alicia Keys, Beyonce etc are all victims of this.

Neyo’s Miss Independent – Original Song

The Imitation

Alicia Keys – Sleeping with a Broken Heart

The Jamaican Copy by Various Jamaican Dancehall Artistes

The Diva Beyonce

Do you see elements of Beyonce’s style in this video?

To imitate means to copy the actions, appearance, mannerisms, or speech of; mimic. In a recent post I expressed my admiration for Beyonce. I knew the regular readers would find that as a surprise. My love for her is more than an appreciation for her music but more so an admiration in the way she carries herself and performs in the music industry. Her team led by her dad treats her like a product – which is actually is.

I may also like her because her father has many years experience in Marketing and knows the application and the understanding of such. I will agree with her critics that she isn’t the best singer the world has seen and she is overrated. However, what Beyonce has is a commanding stage presence, her performances are amazing and insiders in the music industry express many times over again that she works hard. To her credits, she has won tens of Grammies and reached many number ones on the biggest charts internationally. Anytime she exits the stage you would have known she gave her best and you would have been entertained by Sasha Fierce her alter ego. When you look at Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Alicia Keys; these artistes are popular because of their originality and the freshness they bring to the music industry. I have a problem with people imitating established artistes. Interesting I say that knowing I have a business background where you copy an invention or a process to make profits. However, I believe artistes who imitate are short on talent and lack the creativity they need to survive. It is also interesting to observe that artistes just starting out are the ones who imitate because they idolize these established artistes.

Here in Jamaica, there is a female dancehall artiste who goes by the name D’Angel. I remember years ago in an interview she stated that her idol or the person she looks up to Beyonce. I didn’t know that idolizing an artiste would make you imitate their actions even their style of performane but that is imitation.

The trend of imitating the hardest working female in the music industry even exist in USA I saw a video recently and the props, production of the video resembles one Beyonce did earlier in her career. Many people will not notice similarities like this except for the ones who are looking for the details. What if an artiste imitated Lady Gaga, then maybe the imitation would be clear for everyone to see. It appears the more mild the imitation artistes get a free pass on stealing someone’s ideas and make it their own to generate profits.

For those who are able to dig up the singers Beyonce imitated will agree that some of her ideas may not be new but she uses her own style to add to what was done before to make it her own.

I believe in making your own self. Each one of us has unique talents and gifts that make us special. What if everyone blogged the same way, sang the same way, listened to classical music etc we wouldn’t have diversity.

Oprah recently produced a show to highlight the crises in Haiti. On the program Rihanna was featured singing Bob Marley’s Redemption Song. Here she sings an established song – sang it word for word but added her own style and creativity to the song – which turned out great. I cannot stop listening to this song which was produced to help raise money for the Haitians.

Entertainers should desist from imitating artistes all in the name to make a profit. These songs are played on the internet and on local radio stations and I would assume they make money from appearance fees singing these songs. I am tired of it.

Haiti’s Plight

The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti suffered a mighty 7.0 magnitude earthquake ripping Port-Au-Prince sending shockwaves as far as the United States and Jamaica in the Caribbean. I did not feel the quake but I do feel the pain and the agony that the Haitian people must be feeling. Imagine a country with poor infrastructure, poor people, ¾ of the population unemployed, most government agencies destroyed, mass graves etc etc. That is how impoverished the Haitian people are today. Forget about the US dollars you hear they live on, when it rains in Haiti it pours causing major flooding. I am grateful that it isn’t raining there because it would have been a worse position to be in for rescue efforts. To say their lives were better would be an understatement but in 30 seconds everything changed. As one survivor puts it “it happened so fast”.

President's Palace

Before Tuesday none of us were thinking of Haiti, we may have known the grim realities there. We were busy trying to ride through our own mountains – unemployment, recession. For now, others are suffering and they need our attention. Today and for many more months and years Haiti will be seeking all the help they can get to rebuild the country they once had.

In the past days, many charity organizations and corporate entities have been furiously soliciting funds and clothing for the millions of people who have been dislocated from their homes. Jamaicans, Americans, Canadians, Russians and others around the world are playing their role in assisting the Haitians. Because of Jamaica’s proximity to Haiti it will be the last check point before all the donations arrive in Haiti from the Caribbean region.

I must say I have been addicted to the coverage of the Haitian Earthquake on CNN and online (Twitter and the various online news agencies) and I am now taking a break to pen this post. It has been a wonderful coverage from CNN. They may be low in ratings on politics in the US but they are performing excellently in bringing the latest news over there in Haiti. It was reported earlier today that the Haitian people are becoming more frustrated with relief efforts. This and many other things like looting, breakout of diseases, more of the injured dying etc can be expected as the country still without basic amenities like electricity and water supply heal from the tragic event.

We may never go to Haiti or see the place with our own eyes. I am sure you have seen the images and videos from the area as they tell a grim tale of what happened on Tuesday. As the days go by we will be bombarded with advertisements pleading to donate funds to help with the relief efforts there. You can HELP!

Tips on Helping Haiti

  1. Donate only to established agencies.
  2. Do not provide confidential information when donating funds.
  3. Be wary of scammers who are on the loose because more people are giving.
  4. Give with love and a grateful heart.

You may be wondering how you can help. I would suggest sending money. There are many text lines open to donate to the Haitian people in their darkest moment.

I texted to my local line here in Jamaica and it felt good. I received a text later saying that “To date Jamaica has raised J$2.3 million for the Haiti Relief Fund.” That is equivalent to US $25, 813.69. Oh damn. I seriously thought it would have translated higher. Oh well, there you go. Goes to show how weak my Jamaican dollar is.

I texted 'HELP'

To the Number 162

60….70….80….90…100

Are you looking forward to growing old?

Are you looking forward to be classified as a senior citizen?

Are you looking forward to the day where you will be termed as ‘old man’, ‘old lady’, ‘grandpa’, ‘grandma’?

Are you really looking forward to the day where you will have dentures, a wheelchair, a walking stick, or not being able to drive?

Old people may be looked down upon but being old is a whole other life. Experienced, knowledgeable, informed, weak, strong are all characteristics that can be used to describe senior citizens. I am borderline gerascophobic – fear of growing old. I am thrilled when someone looks at me and says I look 19 or 18. Some make comments that I do not look my age – mu glad bag bursts with joy flowing over. I remember when I was in high school I would tell people I am 16 when I was really 18. They believed me because I actually look younger than my age.

With times changing and new developments every day I cannot begin to fathom living old. I am scared because if we are this advanced in 2010 I cannot think how sophisticated we will be in the next 50 years. For many young people fast food is the order of the day. We love the pizza, KFC, Subway etc the list goes on. For this year 2010 I promised myself that I would be eating out fast food style once per month. I have equaled my limit so far but trust me it will be hard. I hope I can maintain the once per month eat out quota I set for myself.

Have I made a realistic goal?

With busy schedules and work, people are forced to eat out but can we finance a constant fast food diet? My two favorite fast food outlets locally are KFC and Island Grill. With the recession and increase in prices the average meals these days are $6 US. I was speaking with a friend recently and he suggested that these fast food outlets should be added to the list of participating restaurants in our local restaurants week. Eating out is becoming a luxury especially in this recession.

If you are concerned with looking younger than your age and are health conscious a withdrawal from fast food could be your best alternative. Eating healthy home cooked meals should form part of your daily regime if you want to look and feel good in those latter years. The decisions we make today could affect our lifestyle later on in life and could reflect how fast you age.

Today we watch MTV, VH1 and listen to Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Jay Z, Rihanna, Taylor Swift etc. Entertainment changes drastically when you are old. No old person wants to hear ‘boom boom boom’ in their 70’s but we may find ourselves listening to more classical pieces and more news on television. Going to the movies could be a thing of the past as our eyes will be old. With all the computer time and employees fixated before screens at work, I am convined our generation will have more eye problems than our forefathers. You may want to limit surfing the internet and television viewing to save those eyes. Sometimes I wonder what the elderly do at home. Most times older folks are indoors talking to their spouse or relatives. In the next 50 years I hope more establishments geared towards entertaining the elderly will be developed. I think we will be living large – constantly going out. These places of entertainment will be extremely beneficial to our generation because we are constantly on the move, even now I am multitasking.

As we age, we should embrace the advances in technology and communications. Without a doubt my generation in the next 50 years will be more accepting to new developments understanding that we can afford it. Communication will not die but a greater emphasis will be placed on it. Can you believe Facebook and YouTube will be history – who knows Google may be gone? I hope I will be here to witness the changes, even to tweet about it. Come on Twitter is forever – that will never grow old.

Years ago, I started college and the course was slated to end in 2009. Back in 2004 I thought to myself “the world will end before I finish this course”. I thought 2009 was so far away but time flies. We are now in 2010. At the end of this month I will be seven years closer to thirty. I can’t believe I said that.

I am no longer scared of growing old I am scared I will not enjoy my old days. I want to enjoy it.

Growing old is good, getting all the grey hairs are a blessing. I’m seeing Obama grey and I know its stress!

I am beginning to think growing up isn’t all that bad, once I grow gracefully.

I’ve Been TAGGED!

You can imagine my shock when I am minding my own business surfing the net, checking in on my favourite blogs when I stumble on Pearl of BS. I was tagged on Pearl of BS and the post got me interested and I decided to write one similar.

So the rule is that you must write ten random things about yourself. If you follow my blog, you may pick up my likes, dislikes and things that inspire me. Check out my list below.

TEN THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT ME…

  1. I am a Beyoncé fan.
  2. I’m left-handed.
  3. I have a condition called hyperhydrosis (my hands sweat excessively when stressed)
  4. I don’t like Sci-Fi films.
  5. I like being alone.
  6. I love Reality TV (humiliating shows like the Biggest Loser and the talent searches like America’s Best Dance Crew- the whole gamut.
  7. I can’t dance (seriously!).
  8. I like fashion and dream of modeling.
  9. I’m borderline gerascophobic (fear of aging).
  10. I (REALLY) love to eat (from savoury to sweet and almost everything in between).

The hard part is here – I must tag other blogs. Why? Now, I won’t tag other blogs because if I do I will get in deep trouble. Really! I will say this though:

“The Pearls of May are Friggin from Bearman and Midwest in Halfgay Writerdood. Mama and Captain gave a Sense of Humor that Crystal Missed the Dennis Journey. The Kat got the Top of my Ocean Bottom.” – Corve DaCosta

***Only some people will figure out what I just said. It makes no sense.

Thanks to all those people in the quote above. I love your blogs and enjoy reading them and sometimes having a serious laugh. 🙂 I want you to come back soon because the next blog will be sweeter than this one. If you are on my blogroll you are taggged.

To really tag your blog the correct way, leave a comment.

Zodiac Signs and You

I was at a party last weekend and a discussion began about zodiac signs. I am an Aquarian and it appeared that people seriously seek friendships from a particular zodiac sign and it extends into dating, the whole compatibility issue. My birthday is January 30, I am not a follower of zodiac signs but from that discussion it daunted on me to see how common the characteristics of a sign can be.

I have two personalities which is unique of Aquarians. I appear to be shy, quiet and reserved but the truth is I can be a totally different person by the snap of my fingers. I turn into this energetic, outgoing individual which is not fake that is me as well. Most people who know me will remember the reserved type, laidback, problem solving, level headed Corve etc. I recently began to think that this could affect me professionally. I remember I was in a discussion with my boss and I made a statement that I have many other talents. We were working on a project and we needed to go on air (radio station) to promote an expo we were planning. So I expressed interest in doing it. Being the only alternative he gave me the opportunity (he could have done it by himself). After the interview he was blown away, flabbergasted that I really delivered – the interview was really good. I am hard to please and I am critical of myself even. I told that story just to emphasize how far apart my personalities are. In college I also campaigned by Students’ Union President (lost by 100 votes) but I served up that energetic personality to energize the campaigns, something my campus lacked. The year after candidates was coming to me for advice.

So this week I saw online celebrities born in January. I knew Oprah, Justin Timberlake and others were born in the month of January. I have never researched though other celebrities or popular people who were born in the same month. So I decided to Google and I found something very striking, Dick Cheney and Rachel Uchitel (Justin Timberlake) were born on January 30, Oprah is the 29th and Timberlake is on the 31st.  Can you believe my disdain, my shock? lol Truth be told I don’t mind it.

I spent some time researching facts on Aquarians and it is so intriguing to see the similarities scream at you from the screen. It is true that I run from emotional expression, I am ‘extra’ independent, a humanitarian, helping others, a good listener, and original. What was interesting was to see the best bed mates for the Aquarian man would be Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius, Aries, and Aquarius.

It was a huge debate at the party about the compatibility of those from different zodiac signs. I would not date someone the ‘zodiac’ way, I just think that there are exceptions and you may cut yourself off from true happiness if you follow the stars. What if? I mean are you more concerned about the birth date more than the person’s heart and soul.

I have a dream that one day you will not be judged by your birth date but by your content of your character.

I would love to hear from people who deliberately dated from the advices given in horoscopes and hear how successful it is. I remember in high school (many years ago J) the girls would be all over the newspaper checking the horoscopes. Looking back I noticed that the guys would not be so thrilled about it but may just have read it for the heck of it. So do females read horoscopes more than males? That is interesting. I clicked on a particular website and I must say the colors on the site were very feminine – pinks and reddish tones, not to mention all the photos were of females and the only photo that depicted a man was soliciting females to date males on that particular website.

I find the information on these websites very interesting, convincing but I will take it all with a grain of salt.

This post will look at two movies, Avatar and Up in the Air.

These are the hottest movies to start the year with. I watched Avatar last week and saw Up in the Air a few nights ago. Two very different movies, totally different budgets, and will receive two different classes of ratings – both rated among the best. I am no movie critic but here is my take on the movies.

Up in the Air

If you were ever to hear the words “You’re fired” who would you want to hear it from? The famous Donald Trump, Ashton Kutcher, your company’s CEO, or your direct manager/supervisor. Imagine a stranger entering your firm to deliver the bad news. The movie Up in the Air directed by James Reitman is about Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) whose duty is to travel across the USA delivering the sad news to employees who have been ‘let go’; by their managers. Interesting job, Isn’t it? Achieving 10 million flier miles just by his job he doesn’t see the importance of relationships and rightfully so, Ryan Bingham has no time to date and cannot devote his attention to anyone because of his busy schedule. Interestingly, he meets Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga). They have a great chemistry, similar job – travelling and falls in love – well Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) does. The movie reveals a damning revelation which ends their relationship. A little secret – Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) took relationships for a joke and the one person (Alex Goran) who he took seriously was playing him for a joke. How this was revealed is sad so that is another reason to watch the movie.

Clooney is great in the movie. I do not particularly like the second half of the movie. It became slow. The first half was fantastic Clooney was at his best and I believe that’s what people/critics will remember – acting was great.

Up in the Air has received awards and nominations including six Golden Globe Nominations – Best Picture, Best Director and Lead Actor for Clooney. The movie will certainly do well this award season – expect some Oscar buzz of course.

Jason Reitmam who directed the movie did an awesome job. The cinematography was good. I liked the first ten minutes of the film – just great on film – not your normal introduction.

However, before I watched the movie I checked out the movie trailer. I must say if George Clooney wasn’t in the movie I wouldn’t have watched it – going by the trailer. However watching the movie now makes perfect sense why that script made the trailer.

Up in the Air deserves a watch for sure. I don’t think I would watch it again – it’s not memorable.

4 out of 5.

Avatar

James Cameron

I watched Titanic and didn’t know the name James Cameron. Dumb! The movie Avatar will make you remember him for his stellar work in this film. You have amazing and awarded directors but this guy will receive all the accolades and deserves them this time around. He has no competition.

Avatar has grossed over $1 Billion already and it is the second highest grossed movie of all time. Titanic is the highest in history and grossed $1.842 billion. In the weeks the movie was released Avatar has done so well already. Will it beat Titanic? Duh!!!

That goes to show how good this film is. Do not read the reviews for the film, well you can. Set a date, you will need almost 3 hours – not as bad as Titanic (in hours) – and enjoy the movie. We always hear about movies with great graphics, this is real graphics – $500 million alone on graphics. From start to finish the movie is captivating. If you’re into politics you will love it, movie haters will love it, move lovers will be addicted to it, bloggers will watch it because they read it here. Lol  The movie is that good.

Watch it also because they film had no sex scene. I sat in my seat and wondered how these people who make out. Well Avatar did film a sex scene and it will be on the DVD. If someone asks you what you did to start the new decade – say you watched Avatar. This is the movie of the decade – it is beyond it’s time.

Avatar will be nominated at all the award shows this year. Expect Oscar buzz and expect the movie to win big and to be a major contender in any category. Can I say Avatar is nominated in the same categories with Up in the Air? Avatar steals the show for me.
Avatar – unrated. Perfection for what it is.
