Zodiac Signs and You

I was at a party last weekend and a discussion began about zodiac signs. I am an Aquarian and it appeared that people seriously seek friendships from a particular zodiac sign and it extends into dating, the whole compatibility issue. My birthday is January 30, I am not a follower of zodiac signs but from that discussion it daunted on me to see how common the characteristics of a sign can be.

I have two personalities which is unique of Aquarians. I appear to be shy, quiet and reserved but the truth is I can be a totally different person by the snap of my fingers. I turn into this energetic, outgoing individual which is not fake that is me as well. Most people who know me will remember the reserved type, laidback, problem solving, level headed Corve etc. I recently began to think that this could affect me professionally. I remember I was in a discussion with my boss and I made a statement that I have many other talents. We were working on a project and we needed to go on air (radio station) to promote an expo we were planning. So I expressed interest in doing it. Being the only alternative he gave me the opportunity (he could have done it by himself). After the interview he was blown away, flabbergasted that I really delivered – the interview was really good. I am hard to please and I am critical of myself even. I told that story just to emphasize how far apart my personalities are. In college I also campaigned by Students’ Union President (lost by 100 votes) but I served up that energetic personality to energize the campaigns, something my campus lacked. The year after candidates was coming to me for advice.

So this week I saw online celebrities born in January. I knew Oprah, Justin Timberlake and others were born in the month of January. I have never researched though other celebrities or popular people who were born in the same month. So I decided to Google and I found something very striking, Dick Cheney and Rachel Uchitel (Justin Timberlake) were born on January 30, Oprah is the 29th and Timberlake is on the 31st.  Can you believe my disdain, my shock? lol Truth be told I don’t mind it.

I spent some time researching facts on Aquarians and it is so intriguing to see the similarities scream at you from the screen. It is true that I run from emotional expression, I am ‘extra’ independent, a humanitarian, helping others, a good listener, and original. What was interesting was to see the best bed mates for the Aquarian man would be Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius, Aries, and Aquarius.

It was a huge debate at the party about the compatibility of those from different zodiac signs. I would not date someone the ‘zodiac’ way, I just think that there are exceptions and you may cut yourself off from true happiness if you follow the stars. What if? I mean are you more concerned about the birth date more than the person’s heart and soul.

I have a dream that one day you will not be judged by your birth date but by your content of your character.

I would love to hear from people who deliberately dated from the advices given in horoscopes and hear how successful it is. I remember in high school (many years ago J) the girls would be all over the newspaper checking the horoscopes. Looking back I noticed that the guys would not be so thrilled about it but may just have read it for the heck of it. So do females read horoscopes more than males? That is interesting. I clicked on a particular website and I must say the colors on the site were very feminine – pinks and reddish tones, not to mention all the photos were of females and the only photo that depicted a man was soliciting females to date males on that particular website.

I find the information on these websites very interesting, convincing but I will take it all with a grain of salt.

Happy Holidays

This is a time where family members come together whether to have that meal or to have that grand reunion. While it may not be the happiest time for all (snow, delayed flights, recession, new taxes, unemployment etc), it surely concludes a year that has gone 2009. I was not brought up celebrating Christmas. Boring, right? That tradition still is with me but certainly I will attempt at being all in the moment – buying gifts and telling everyone I know – Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas or Seasons Greetings.

With days before the big day it takes cash to celebrate these days. I pass men on the streets selling Christmas trees, the malls all have sales and extended time to accommodate the shopping for the season. Just leaving school and working God knows there isn’t much cash to spread around and while I may not be seeing a Merry Christmas (expectation of gifts), I’d really prefer my money stay at the bank and maybe Santa Claus could bring some interest there.

Merry Christmas to all my readers, to those bloggers who I pounce upon your pages –read and comment, those who stop on these pages to read, those who religiously comment.

May the year 2010 be your best.

Flopped Copenhagen

With millions of people being added to the world population it is a time bomb waiting to happen before we start destroying planet Earth. For many scientists, Al Gore and others we have started that process already. One would think that the researched data presented would be based on facts but the disparaging rumours of the skewed data cannot rest well when making policy decisions.

With this Copenhagen Summit surrounding Global Warming and the damages to the environment I do not think how positive an outcome can be if politicians from around the world meet to solve a world crises. They cannot even solve their local country issues (recession etc) so how can they solve a global problem.

The best way to resolve this issue is to have each country develop policies to protect their own country – their own piece of the world. Having world leaders all congregate and pander on a stage – some of them built on egos – they cannot solve or begin to attempt to solve the myriad problems that face us as global citizens. With each country having dialogue with their own manufacturers in their respective countries there and then we will begin to have real dialogue on how we can all help the world to become a better place.

What was not also encouraging was the fact that most of the world leaders flew personal and individual private jets to the summit in Copenhagen. This cannot be sending the right signal to the world that we are in a mode of crises when your intentions are to damage the planet. I am baffled that at all these international summits as well that the sole leadership seems to rest on the American President. It cannot be that we hold the American President to a different level and esteem than the other countries. Small islands, huge nations must see their role as important in saving the planet.

Entertainment

Buju Banton

Mark Myrie popularly known as Buju Banton is still behind bars in Florida, USA. This continues to memorize many Jamaicans who still do not believe that the international reggae artiste was able to commit such wrong – conspiracy to deal drugs (cocaine). As a Rastafarian, Buju Banton believes in the smoking of the controversial herb marijuana. They (Rastafarians) despise the use of cocaine. Jamaicans and the millions of fans internationally are upset he was found dabbling in this kind of drug. Some even say it was a set up by the homosexuals who want to see the mango down. I am not shocked by these developments surrounding Buju Banton. Below are lyrics from one of his popular songs called ‘ Driver”.

So driver, don’t stop at all, mi seh drop this Arizona round a Alba Mall
Driver, mi seh don’t even hitch, collect dat likkle food deh yah and come back quick
Driver, just rememba di damn speed limit
Cau if yuh, run in di Feds my friend dat is it

In English it reads:

Driver, Don’t stop at all, Drop this at Arizona around Alba Mall

Driver, I tell you do not stop, collect the food and come back quick

Driver, Just remember the speed limit

Because if you exceed the speed limit, the FEDS will come after you.

Although that’s a poor attempt at translating Jamaican patois, Buju Banton in his song Driver details clearly how to avoid the police in retrieving the drugs. A Grammy nominee for 2009 Buju Banton could see himself winning the reggae/dancehall category. If he does, the Grammy nominee prides themselves with his nomination. The organization states they support free speech.

Buju Banton is a real icon in Jamaican music. For many years he has toured Europe etc blazing the trail for reggae. For many people, this is a direct attack on reggae music and will reduce the popularity of the music in certain quarters of the world. This could be Banton’s darkest moments. If he was caught by Jamaican cops, he would have been a free man now. The fact that he was caught by American police Jamaicans are not hopeful he will leave lock up for anytime soon.

He is innocent until proven guilty.

X Factor Finals

The X Factor is the best talent show ever with the biggest production. The staging makes American Idol look silly and childish. I watched the finals through a link on the internet on Sunday afternoon. I was not only impressed but I was overwhelmed by the production and the staging. From the lights, to the glitz that was on the show, it really exposes the contestants to what the world of stardom and having a house screaming at you offers. Talk about nerves! So there were two guys in the finals this year. They were Olly and Joe and boy did they rock it. They are two different artistes with two different ranges. The moment I heard Joe McElderry sang the first note I tweeted that his voice was simply magnificent, young and fresh. Enjoy his winning song, titled The Climb and it is inspiring.

Miss World 2009

This was by far the worst production of Miss World in years and I was not impressed. I could have missed the show and wouldn’t have felt bad about it. I did not like the fact that the girls were entertaining the crowd. Come on, use established names and singers to do that. The girls have enough nerves dealing with just coming on stage. The production had the best talents on show – although we might think that’s cool – it is tacky. I liked the ending so much it was like bringing the old version of Miss World back and it worked. The ending was simply the best part for me. I did not like all the drumming by the South Africans but guess what if that is your culture, show it off. I would have liked more diversity in the offering.

Paddy Jones

This next video is simply breath taking. Expect the unexpected. The video surrounds Paddy Jones who is 75 years old and still can deliver a performance that rivals the winner of Dancing with the Stars and all the other talent competitions around the place. I wish this old lady all the best. You will expect bones to break at her age but she makes it look easy, although it is not.

ThanksgivingContest09

WordPress is currently having a competition entitled Thanksgiving Contest 09. The deadline passed and it was extended to December 4, 2009. I was always interested from the start and just got around to creating the video.

Enjoy my video. I had lots of fun putting it all together – took a lot of work 🙂 The entire night. So it is now wee hours in the morning and I must get my beauty sleep – I have work in a few hours. TGIF!

The video essentially shows the components that make my life balanced and happy and at ease. This is my Thanksgiving.

Let me first start out by saying I was on Nationwide Radio in Kingston, Jamaica promoting an expo. I am the Event Officer for the expo. I didn’t want to appear on the programme but I eventually did. People who listened to the broadcast expressed that they were impressed and liked the delivery.

I have a personal issue that I will be working on. My demeanour does not speak of my potential and abilities. I hope I am expressing myself well. Most people who know me do not really KNOW ME. I appear to be reserved, laid back, unenergetic and conservative. Although that may be true, I have the ability to turn on the energy when needed. Some folks today call it an alter ego. I may be reserved but when the opportunity presents itself I turn into a total different person full of energy and life. It causes people who will offer opportunities to hold back because they don’t know what I am truly capable of.

I am a talented young man who is really underutilised in my job. So today, when I turned on the alter ego (no name for that person yet) my boss was really overwhelmed and seemed particularly impressed with my delivery. I want to get to the place where I turn it on all the time. I just hope I won’t turn people off.
You can’t have your cake and eat it, I guess.

Dancing with the Stars

Last night I watched the finale of the Dancing with the Stars. It was an entertainment night, filled with excitement and of course the revelation of the winner of the season. It was a surprise to see Donny Osmond win over Mya. I really think with all my heart that Mya would have taken the trophy home. I wanted to see her win. Her dance routine not ignoring her partner were always excellent and it reflects the perfect scores she received in the season.

However, the point must be noted that the core target audience may just have voted more for the winner. Clearly, if the winner was decided on the fact of delivery over the season then Mya would have won. Some people would argue that Kelly should have won based on the fact that she was the most improved. The fact is voting process was used and sometimes it isn’t fair.

My Favourite MYA

So of course, with Donny winning someone else would have taken the night. Whitney Houston was simply fantastic. I will only say this – her addictions may have affected her voice but she certainly can still deliver a great performance. Her songs on the night, I am still on cloud nine over it. Sorry! The videos are posted below for your viewing. The last song on the first video is one of my favourites from Houston so you could imagine my excitement and jumping in the house when she started to sing it. I have also posted a video of the song “I wana dance with somebody” from Whitney Houston back in the days. I have posted it because this is the real performance of the song. Enjoy.

Advertisements are a form of communication that is used to persuade consumers to purchase a product. Advertisements form part of every marketing plan of a product or service and takes on different forms as technology increases. The costs vary and while some may be expensive, companies invest a lot of energy and monies in getting them right the first time. Most large businesses do not develop advertisements on their own but contract agencies to perform that aspect of the job. We cannot deny the immense power advertisements have on a potential market and will not underestimate the powers they may have over a particular group of people.

As marketers, we have to be very careful with the messages we send with an advert. In that, when you create an advertisement you have to ensure that are not violating rights and also not discriminating against any group among others while at the same time accomplish other objectives. Advertising executives with their creative teams must ensure that these advertisements do not offend a group and that to me is the most important factor to be considered when creating advertisements.

The Jamaican market is not an educated one and that is no excuse to produce adverts that are not fashionable, full of taste and ones that are refined. Recently, over a year there have been advertising campaigns promoting energy drinks. Of course in a sexualized country like Jamaica, sex doesn’t only sell it is embedded in everything we hear and see. This is not to say that this does not exist in other markets and are with other products or services but it exist in a raunchy way.

In this post I have decided to analyze two advertisements that promote a similar product. Both are energy drinks but the company has decided to highlight the feature where it assumes to help someone’s sexual drive. Nothing is wrong with that, some people need the help and are grateful for such but it shouldn’t be done in a distasteful way that offends groups especially when the ad is booked to be seen by children.

The first video below is the product called Magnum. They released this video maybe over a year ago and had the tag line “a mus di magnum inna him” which translates in English to mean “It’s the magnum in him”.  The advertisement depicts a couple in a bedroom. The woman slips in the bathroom to take a break apparently from the hot sexual experience. Overall the advertisement although sexy is tame to some extent not giving much away, leaving much to your imagination. Watch below.

The other product called Mandingo is another energy drink which promises to assist you with your sexual abilities in the bedroom. On the streets Jamaicans combine this product with beers to make a stronger drink which even heightens your ability in the bedroom – so they say! This advert however, is very trashy, offending and is distasteful in every way. This advertisement should not have been approved with the extreme and over the top sexiness. This advertisement is shown when families sit to watch television on any given evening. In posting the videos I have decided to post the first Mandingo commercial.

I am not amazed with the production of some advertisements in Jamaica. I know people who create advertisements for major international companies here and they have no experience in marketing only a connection and network. It is sad because they give others in the field a bad name because of their poor reputation. My favourite video above is the first one – I must say. The female talent in the advertisement is very convincing, and she does a great job by not being over the top – just safe. However, the female talent in the second video who is a popular porn star is very raunchy, sick and unappealing. The second Mandingo commercial is so in your face and it makes it blah. Nothing to aspire to be or anything left to the viewer’s imagination. Anyway, that’s Jamaica advertising for you. Don’t get me wrong we have great ads too.

We couldn’t end on a bad note, so I decided to post an advertisement from Japan. It is an energy drink and just watch how sexual abilities doesn’t play a role in the advert. We know Japanese to be hardworking and ambitious people-they accomplished just that in the advertisement.

Entertainment: Bits & Pieces

Tye Tribbett came to Jamaica for a concert on Sunday, November 8, 2009. I was not the biggest fan of Tye Tribbett but now I am a huge one. I decided to attend the concert just mere hours before it started and would never have regretted it.

TyeTribbett-01-big

The concert was simply fantastic. All the other guest performers did extremely well which made the night in Kingston, Jamaica even better. I loved his performance from the beginning to the end. His back up G.A choir was on point. Who knew six people could deliver such a huge sound? I was impressed and that is no easy feat. No lie they looked horrible. I expected him to be dressed a little bit better – was too casual for me.

beyonce

Beyonce

I hardly attend concerts because they (singers and artistes) cannot deliver the same sound they record in studio because of the different edits used to create the final edit. So I prefer to listen to the tracks on a CD or even online. Beyonce is an exception to this rule though. She has the ability to deliver an entertaining show and that makes her so popular even today.

Great job Tye Tribbett and hope you will come again.

Rihanna looked amazing. Well, she looked stunning as she collected her award as Glamour’s Woman of the Year in New York. With all the hurt she has suffered earlier this year, she is certainly looking for bigger things now.

Politics

Reggae music is very popular worldwide and whilst it is known for its Rastafarian culture, Jamaican reggae artistes are also known for their homophobic attacks in their music. Recently, Mark ‘Buju Banton’ Myrie – popular international reggae performer met with gay advocates in the United States of America (USA) to have dialogue on his violent lyrics targeted to the gay community. Back in Jamaica, because of its homophobic culture, Jamaicans were lamenting and began to hate Mark ‘Buju Banton’ Myrie because of his meeting with the gay community. Some claimed they would not be listening to his music, while others were just disappointed. Yesterday in the newspaper here Sunday, October 25, 2009 an article declared the church finally agrees with the reggae performers; they support reggae acts who express their negative opinions on the gay community. However, the international gay community should know these facts about the operations in Jamaica – by no means it is perfect. Jamaicans claim to be a Christian society; with this the country sees a high murder rate – third in the world. No Jamaican is safe these days, not even tourists who are caught in the cross fires sometimes. In the entertainment industry rising reggae talents wanting to make an impact locally sing songs that incite violence towards the gay community and songs that sexualize young children. By doing this they become instant celebrities being played on radio stations and television programmes. Politicians get in the act as well bashing gay people even in the House of Parliament and some may bash gays to get votes. You see, the Jamaican society is not as educated as others, they are ignorant and are caught up defending Christian values but on the other hand the outcry against other crimes are not expressed with such disdain. No one living in Jamaica is shocked a 5 year old is snatched, raped and killed. Killing people and depriving legal abiding citizens on their rights have become so routine that you wonder who is next; praying you are not.

For Jamaica to change, it will take a new generation, one that is educated and see the world like a global village – accepting diversity. I share with you a perfect example, Barbados. Barbados is a Caribbean nation, 99% literacy rate, first world status and they accept fully people from different orientations.

In the House of Parliament, they have raised the issue of Charter of Rights – someone told me it includes fundamental rights for all WoW- and nowhere in the document have politicians on both sides acknowledge that they will be discussing the issue as it relates to one’s sexual orientation. Instead they have both offered early statements signaling their stance on the issue which they have ignored in the bill. Last year the Prime Minister of Jamaica declared in a BBC interview that no gay cabinet member will ever serve the Jamaican people under his leadership, while the Leader of the Opposition statements justified the position of the government. Politicians in Jamaica do not care about the Jamaican people, they are a set of corrupt, inefficient group whose main aim is to divide so long as they remain in their positions. They could not care less about the thousands of people who are affected by this decision. Instead to secure their votes they ensure that Parliament does not debate gay issues and they pander to the ignorant masses to get votes. Historically Jamaican voters do not vote on issues. Voters in the USA vote on issues such as health care, economic stability, securing the border, Foreign Policy – Wars in Iraq etc. Nooooo! In Jamaica for a politician to win, you better fork out the cash to fill those mouths with chicken, curried goat and lots of beer if you can give cash, then you are the big man able to represent the Jamaican people. Corrupt politicians run for new posts all the time, it’s the norm!

So the only, well not the only solution but the most powerful solution is to hit the artistes where it hurts most and its in their pockets. Fight and keep them from performing in your cities – the ones who support for the mass killings of gay people. There are local artistes who are trending on a new path one that does not incite violence, only if more will follow and they have been but there are a few bad apples still.

There is no way in 2009 that we can condone people supporting those heinous actions.

Inspiration

After several months of unemployment my quests to search for a job was drained. I was disappointed in myself because I think that I am an astute hard worker who would be a great asset to any firm. Realizing the reality that my small network failed I became uninterested in the professional workforce exploring entrepreneurial opportunities that could come my way. Although they are still open I landed a job recently.

I observed days after starting to work that it will take a few days or weeks to get into a work routine. It took a while because I was home doing nothing for months. Going from unscheduled days to a minute by minute schedule, reporting to a superior I became flustered because I was not in the frame of mind to work.

After weeks in my new job I have recognized that I may not be enjoying this job. Keep in mind that I am not lazy or have a bad attitude on the job. It will take a toll on any employee who doesn’t have job security or even a scope for growth and improvement. I have been approached by other firms for new employment opportunities. Although nothing is in black and white yet, I am excited!

I can understand anyone who at this moment is unemployed. I have not celebrated my employment yet because personally I do not consider myself in a real job yet. I hope when the other opportunities materialize I can. For those who are unemployed, stay focused by applying, remain motivated and patient, things must change.

Mine took six months to, your time will come.

One advice, please keep your mind active. Read a book, read newspapers online or even read works in your particular field. Employers want you to be on top of things as you step through the door. I’m just saying!
