February 6 – Today is Bob Marley’s 65th Birthday.

Bob Marley

Bob Marley is a worldwide legend. He is celebrated locally in Jamaica and loved internationally. The first Bob Marley song I learnt was One Love and many will admit this is the only one they know. I also know Three Little Birds because my father would always sing this one – even hum it or whistle to it. It was like a morning ritual. He would be by the side of the house near my room window working and all you hear is “Don’t Worry, about a thing.” Can I say maybe that was the wake up call.

Bob Marley’s song One Love is a staple on Jamaica’s Tourism advertisements internationally. In many parts of the world this man is idolised. Jamaicans will argue he isn’t awarded or celebrated enough because to this day some still advocate for him to be a National Hero or to be more awarded for his work. He brought Jamaican music to the world and has paved the platform for today’s musicians from Jamaica.

Imagine today we celebrate Michael Jackson’s birthday and the television networks don’t even have a feature about his life. I am sure they will have one. However, for most Jamaicans Bob Marley is just as huge (his music) and I expected to wake up to a nice Bob Marley program but there are none. I know many people are sad, I just read a tweet from a Jamaican who expressed he wants to see Bob Marley trending.

Happy Birthday to a son of Jamaica who has touched the world musically with his gifts. He will be remembered for his repertoire of songs and for bringing Jamaica’s music, reggae to the world.

Happy Birthday Bob Marley.

I’ve Been TAGGED!

You can imagine my shock when I am minding my own business surfing the net, checking in on my favourite blogs when I stumble on Pearl of BS. I was tagged on Pearl of BS and the post got me interested and I decided to write one similar.

So the rule is that you must write ten random things about yourself. If you follow my blog, you may pick up my likes, dislikes and things that inspire me. Check out my list below.

TEN THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT ME…

  1. I am a Beyoncé fan.
  2. I’m left-handed.
  3. I have a condition called hyperhydrosis (my hands sweat excessively when stressed)
  4. I don’t like Sci-Fi films.
  5. I like being alone.
  6. I love Reality TV (humiliating shows like the Biggest Loser and the talent searches like America’s Best Dance Crew- the whole gamut.
  7. I can’t dance (seriously!).
  8. I like fashion and dream of modeling.
  9. I’m borderline gerascophobic (fear of aging).
  10. I (REALLY) love to eat (from savoury to sweet and almost everything in between).

The hard part is here – I must tag other blogs. Why? Now, I won’t tag other blogs because if I do I will get in deep trouble. Really! I will say this though:

“The Pearls of May are Friggin from Bearman and Midwest in Halfgay Writerdood. Mama and Captain gave a Sense of Humor that Crystal Missed the Dennis Journey. The Kat got the Top of my Ocean Bottom.” – Corve DaCosta

***Only some people will figure out what I just said. It makes no sense.

Thanks to all those people in the quote above. I love your blogs and enjoy reading them and sometimes having a serious laugh. 🙂 I want you to come back soon because the next blog will be sweeter than this one. If you are on my blogroll you are taggged.

To really tag your blog the correct way, leave a comment.

PALIN CABINET

Oprah

Sarah Palin’s interview with Oprah Winfrey will be a hit. It will have the media talking for the next two weeks and beyond. The political pundits who spewed hate against this lady will cringe when their deepest fears are realized when she inevitably runs for President the next time around. Please clear the thought of a second term for Obama. The economic situation will change all those dreams. The fact is Sarah Palin represents to the ‘tee’ the ideal Republican Party candidate and could be a force to reckon with if she makes that decision to do the right thing. I am compassionate to those folks who today think Palin is not dignified or unqualified to serve as President. That would mean the others who served and is serving in that same position aren’t worthy themselves. The Palin brand will see traction in the coming years and it gives her more time to create the right image for the post. Do not forget a day in politics is a long time.

So Obama faces a decision to send more troops to the war torn Middle East country. This decision will define his presidency and I can’t wait to what is going to come of it. Obama campaigned to end the war. I don’t know if this is a broken promise but I would have loved to see him with the balls to leave Afghanistan and really bring about that change he preached – campaign and joked about.

Entertainment

I got to watch The Kardashians yesterday – the one featuring the infamous wedding with Khloe and Lamar. I am a fan of the show – have always been. Don’t we love the drama? There is one thing I have noticed from the show. Of all the drama we have known the family to deliver you get the picture family values are at the foundation of this family. Of course, we can imagine the disgust and quarrels a family goes through when someone plans to get married after meeting the other under a month. We normally think the person is crazy because of the sudden decision. All in all, families are best when they come together and share the joy of others.

Many may think its another fake marriage and fake love. Who knows?

Love & Relationship

The tip for the week is “Do not nag your partner.” Quit it.

Thanks Daddy

We never can overemphasize a father’s impact in his child’s life. Many times those who have a father’s presence take it for granted. While those who are without a father find ‘father figures’ in the form of boyfriends, uncles and other relatives, it is not surprising that statistics emanating from fatherless homes and lives are horrendous. Many of the myriad problems societies face are a result of fathers not playing a role in their child’s early years. Of course, the same happens when mothers abandon the parent-child relationship. However, there are more negligent fathers than mothers today. Culturally, we have accepted the absence of the father as normal. We have also accepted the ridiculous excuses that may be given by the father to justify his absence as a parent. Even those who live in the same home with the children need to realize that a father is more than a ‘pay-rent.’

The paternal role as sole financial provider is rapidly becoming obsolete as more and more women make their way in the corporate world. Fathers must come to the realization that all the money in the world can never replace the bonding and interaction that characterize healthy parent-child relationships. The relationship should not be forced. It should be built over the years with trust and communication. Certainly, money plays a role, but children must be made to feel independent and should therefore be provided with their own cash. Parents must secure quality education for their children.

Today marks the eighth anniversary of the war in Afghanistan. The soldiers who are deployed in the war-torn areas, to serve their country in an endless war have rocked millions of families in America. Evidently, both mothers and fathers are away from their families but can you imagine the absence of a father? Many of the stories that are told highlight expecting mothers; and that makes the situation even more devastating. The memories these fathers miss cannot be repeated even if they are recorded. Memories like seeing your child going off to school for the first time, seeing them graduate, play in the park, looking at their report cards are all events that parents anticipate. Fathers suffer but more so the children are impacted emotionally because ‘daddy’ is not at home to share in those private ‘Kodak’ moments. Bonding is reduced to letters and phone calls.

Who can forget the video of the dad hugging his daughter after the little girl threw the ball back on the field? It melted hearts but what should never be missed is the father’s reactions. I watched the video over and over again and wondered how many fathers would have reacted the same way. It makes me wonder because here you have a dad who is clearly a baseball fan who decides to hug his daughter in a moment where he could have been upset.

Fathers are important from the fertilization of the egg to adulthood. We should never at any point think mothers should raise children on their own – even though some women beat the incredible odds of single parenthood. Both mothers and fathers are important in the development and nurturing of a child. We need to ensure more than ever that fathers play that role in a child’s life. Fathers may not be aware but children are watching parents and are learning from their attitude and actions.  A father’s presence in his child’s life makes a difference. Only those who have experienced it can begin to express what it really feels like.

It is time for men to be fathers again.

Politics

This week a video uploaded to YouTube showing children singing a tribute to the American President Barack Obama was very contentious. The children who were of all races by my eyes sang two songs dedicated to Barack Obama – one done to the tune of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Now, there is certainly nothing wrong with anyone showing their love for their Prime Minister or President. However, this tribute that was done to commemorate Black History Month took a turn for the wrong; it was on the borderline of worshiping Obama. We cannot ignore that Obama has made his presidency all about him. He has taken a lot of time to create an image that is respected by millions. So respected he is that opposing Obama is seen to be racist. The position he has as the leader of the free world must be respected. I get the impression from Obama that he wants to be talked about and wants to be seen as the greatest of all – the saviour. He works so hard creating an impression that with this video you cannot forget the speech he made to the children in schools recently.

Below are words the students chant to Obama:

He said that we must take a stand

To make sure everyone gets a chance

Barack Hussein Obama

He said red, yellow, black or white

All are equal in His sight

Mmmmm, Mmmmm, Mmmmm

Barack Hussein Obama

The lyrics in the video are not only shocking but to see underage children without the consent of their parents sing to Obama in this way makes you flabbergasted. This tribute or act of worship does not in anyway congratulate or give credit to the black people who fought for what we have today. It serves to worship; sing the praises and rhetoric that Obama spews on the networks daily. I am saddened that these children were misled by lunatics who are not appreciative of democracy and prefer personalities over substance. I would rather here the children sing of how much the country has grown to elect a black president than to sing “All are equal in His sight”. Do we realize these children are being indoctrinated? This is what we see of Hitler and North Korean leaders and it makes us cringe in our seats. So why doesn’t this make us wonder?

We have all been ‘Obamarized’. We have fallen in love with Obama where to oppose him is racist and to disagree with him makes you a supporter of the right. What those kids did in that video is wrong. Singing Obama’s ideologies to the tune of the Battle Hymn of the Republic makes me disturbed, a little. It does. I am not sure the President would approve it but parents for the most part should be outraged especially if you support Obama and found the video okay. It is given that mainly republican parents are going to be annoyed by it and they should. Supporters of this video should imagine their child singing praises to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. I think then you will understand how crazy and absurd it is of teachers to be directing such an activity.

Love and Relationship

Have you ever seen a couple together and wonder how cute they look together? Uhhhh. When we say they are perfect for each other is it because we love their interactions and chemistry or is it that we love how attractive they are together, how well they compliment each other?

It is something that I have noticed with myself. More so, because sometimes I am asked to find potential partners for people – my own circle of friends. I do not know if it should be called judging but we tend to have our own conclusions based on one look. It is true first impression lasts but do we need to step back and observe couples longer before making our own final predictions.

They say opposites attract. I am not sure how people respond, but what if you saw a couple out and you think they don’t match. Are we ending a couple’s relationship in our psyche before giving them the time to date – before finding our own conclusions?

Rihanna is making the news again and it is rumoured that she is secretly hooking up with beau Justin Timberlake.  These are some photos taken on a video shoot recently. What do you think, what makes two people right for each other – keeping in mind we are looking in from the outside? The jury is out on this one.

Inspiration of the week

Last week I had an encounter that I will always remember. I went on an interview for a job in my field. After the interview session I had the opportunity to have a discussion that really moved me. For this week the inspiration has to 2072865350015798315S500x500Q85deal with focusing on what others say. This is tricky because people will tell you things that will hurt you in the future. As an individual you have to discern between what is good for you and what is bad. Sometimes people tell us good things and because we have a mental block against taking corrections or suggestions we totally ignore what they have to say – for our own detriment. This week we are going to think on the positive suggestions we get. You may not think they are good for you but consider them, evaluate the ideas and see if they make your life better or worse.

You’re on the Internet

angelina_jolieAs an individual who is on the internet everyday, I can’t seem to ignore the fact that most people nowadays are determined in their life to be popular. We are obsessed with how celebrities live, being popular, always having eyes on us. This constant crave has caused the popularity of websites such as www.facebook.com and www.twitter.com to skyrocket. The desire to constantly have people around the world following us and keeping a tab on our lives is attractive to some. Thus, making some people popular without a real purpose or background.

The growth of technological gadgets has also taken off with everyone having a recorder or the ability to take pictures. These are on the many gadgets we use on a daily basis. Whether it is on our phones, or by itself we are constantly recording our lives. Although recording events may not be a bad thing, having moments recorded can come back to haunt us in the future. We have seen this on many occasions where persons record private moments in relationships or even solo. To make this worse somehow these moments never remain in the dark they always come to light. Nothing is wrong with recording these moments, some people believe in having a record but being very careful is very critical. Sometimes people enter relationships and things happen we record the intimate moments and then in the future it comes to light with some embarrassing a partner.TerrellCarter-01-big

The next time you check your inbox, you may get an email from someone sending a link to a story of someone being disgraced on the internet. The world is very open with persons internationally able to see what you might not want them to see. This is such a risk. I am sure you have ‘googled’ yourself.

Things will forever advance, next year this time www.twitter.com or even the top social networking sites will be history; something new will come along and grab our attention. Can we ever ignore higher technologies or stop recording ourselves. The constant love of being in the spotlight may not end this drive to be in a still image or being video taped.

The internet is a good tool, very educational, very entertaining but it could also be our biggest nightmare when something hits the internet that we really didn’t intend to. The next time you take a picture or even record yourself, are you thinking of the risks?

Happiest Nations on Earth

Are you happy?signals-hes-confused-400a020607

On a scale on 1 – 10 with 1 being the lowest meaning least happy and 10 happiest. At what point on the scale are you?

Recently, a research group called New Economics Foundation released a study using the ‘Happy Planet Index’ stating the countries with the most content people. It is important to note that the research took into consideration the ecological footprint and life expectancy of the countries.

So the results are out and three countries from the Caribbean top the list with Costa Rica number one followed by Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

Since I am from Jamaica, a section of this article will refer to that country.

As most people may know Jamaica is known globally for the reggae icon Bob Marley and also the fact that we have the best beaches with amazing hotels to compliment it. The island is dubbed ‘the island of wood and water’. However, the island is also known for its high crime rate (one of the highest in the world), horrible economic conditions and other horrible statistics (inflation etc). Jamaicans were shocked and were wondering how the hell in the world they could be considered one of the happiest nations in the world. The nation is constantly bombarded with high unemployment figures and constant criminal reports in the media. If I may say, if a report came out stating that Jamaica is one of the saddest place to live then most would agree knowing our situation here at home. What is also amazing at this time is that Forbes Magazine names Jamaica among the top 10 countries in the world hardest hit by the global recession and stating that it will take many years to recover.

This research however was clearly different. It took into consideration the ecological footprint and life expectancy of the nation. The ecological footprint is a measure of human demand on the Earth’s ecosystems. Life expectancy is the average number of years that citizens are expected to live within a country.

With these combinations Costa Rica was named the happiest nation on earth. Essentially what the research is saying is that in Costa Rica has a high life expectancy of 78.5 years and are able to do things minimally affecting the environment. Only 99% of its energy comes from renewable sources; surely a lesson for USA.

So the case in Jamaica is similar, citizens here are able to live long while doing so cheaply thus not harming the environment. What is mind boggling though is that most expected those in first world countries to top the list. Why aren’t they? They may not have long life expectancy and most of these countries are damaging the environment.

Personal life

However, the research has called on individuals to self analyze themselves and consider how happy they are personally with their lives. Personally, if I should have taken that survey I might not be that happy. I am currently working on a gig but I am unemployed, I do not have job security. Therefore, my report card would be maybe just average. I am happy in terms of I am able to sustain myself, providing to eat and clothe (because of my parents/family) but other factors that one would consider in the total package I fall short which would tilt my level of happiness one way.

Many persons globally are not happy. We are in a global recession now, persons losing jobs left, right and centre, no health care coverage and the miseries continue. Life can be a mess. This research however should tell a striking message to those who live better than others. Most times we think that those with all the cash to care are happy. We are now seeing with the biggest celebrities that all the money in the world will never buy you happiness. It seems those that live at the extreme are most times happier. Many individuals will never give up their countries to live in the top three happiest countries in the world, but it will remain a fact those who live within their means are always happy.

The next time you wish you had more, you may just be giving up your happiness. Happy People Multicultural 5
