Welcome to the ninth edition in the series of the Water Cooler – appears every Sunday on this blog. This feature will highlight what’s hot, topical and up for discussion.

Here we go.

Politics

18_64_111606_hoyer_pelosiThere is never a dull day in politics. I mean today you’re in; tomorrow you’re out with the possibility of getting in again. Just a few days ago republicans were celebrating their wins in the governor races, last night they lost the bid in reforming health care. This is a win for Obama and I’m sure he rested well on Saturday night. The fight isn’t over as yet though. The bill goes for a fight in the Senate and then we will see what becomes of the unread bill. I didn’t believe the bill would have been passed but congratulations for to the Democratic Party and to Nancy Pelosi for bringing on the fight.

I did not see the news coverage on the vote in its entirety but I certainly heard the cheers from the Democratic supporters who have wanted this for a long time. It may be good timing and it may a political disaster for politicians.

I am not going to fight the bill this week just to say that politicians owe it to their constituents to read the bill in its barack-obama-happyentirety. The lies that were told about this bill were outrageous. We cannot even trust news agencies anymore to provide the factual details on the bill. Moving on I only hope the truth about this bill, its effects on taxpayers will be told.

Rihanna Speaks

Below are videos that show the 20/20 interview by Sawyer. This interview was intimate, damning for Chris Brown, and it made Rihanna look amazing. From a PR point of view, this is what you want to accomplish in an interview like this. This interview outclasses the Oprah, Whitney Houston interview by far – made it look like a joke. This will give Rihanna the comeback she deserves from the battering Brown gave her on that night. It also makes Brown look bad, with his career in limbo.

Sitting here at home thinking about life, pondering about the next move and the opportunities that will come. However, something happened today and it made me really think about the word ‘reputation.’ In college, students can fool around and get away with it. By that I mean, if you fool around ‘well’, you can still have a great job and command a good salary too. I remember years ago when sex tapes were becoming a trend. A tape was released through hackers with a college couple. Of course, no one cared about the male who was also visibly on camera but more emphasis was placed on the girl. With all the reasons for that, it must be a horrible feeling for your most intimate moment to be seen by hundreds of people and the internet!

MagnifyGlassIn the professional world, you are recognized and are judged by your latest project. People tend to forget what you did years ago but the blunder you created minutes ago will remain fresh in their minds.  Being on the job keeps you on your feet. More than ever, job security is on everyone’s mind; forcing people to be productive and efficient. Having people’s trust is critical because they depend on you not only to perform but to surpass expectations. The mere fact you got the project to work on wasn’t a trial and error judgement, more so, it was a deliberated process (most times) based on your skills and competencies. When someone who entrusted you with a duty and in the middle of it withdraws that responsibility to give someone else, it shows you’re incapable of delivering on what is expected. It is alarming because those who you expected to look up to you and who you wanted to impress will now have second thoughts. Because they had high expectations of you and they are now saying and thinking you are not the ‘big fry’ you claim to be.

Sitting here at home, after a lovely Jamaica meal I think about those who are being referred to others because of their tremendous quality and delivery at what they do. Recently one of my acquaintances was referred to a new project. Although there are options in taking a decision, there are ramifications if you turn down someone’s recommendation, especially if it comes from an esteemed, prominent person.

All we have in our professional life is our ‘reputation’. Without it, it may cost you the next job opportunity. I will encourage employees to start creating a reputation that has hard work and Excellency as its foundation in the workplace. The only thing we can build and hold on to is our own reputation. The next time you get that job/responsibility from your boss, suck it up and complete it with pride and hard work; See the forest not the trees.

AI & Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul

I am sure you have worked on a project, a team or a show (production) before. If you haven’t it takes a lot of hard work and tenacity to stay focused. It is a wonderful feeling seeing the event’s proceedings on stage, presenting that project or even winning the match. To see the hard work paying off with huge successes is a vital component. American Idol the epitome of reality television with a focus on seeking new talent is a model which many talent competitions globally have copied to become successful. A major component of a show like this is the host/presenter, and the judges; apart from the production crew and contestants. These people really bring the show together plummeting it to a higher level.

The American Idol’s judges are the real stars of the show. Their experience in the entertainment industry makes their comments valuable and their efforts to train new talents entering the industry worth the while. Each judge on the show will grow into his/her own persona that many viewers will come to love. What is amazing about the show’s model is that those who copy the American Idol structure also copy the judge’s personalities in their own. Therefore, one judge will be very feisty, the other most likely to be encouraging and the other walking the middle of the road. To this end, that makes this a winning strategy for the show and people have come to love and trust the talents that the show crowns as the ultimate winner.

Many times our hard work and sacrifices are never rewarded. This leaves a bad taste in the mouths of many viewers who have come to appreciate the show. Recently, Paula Abdul a judge on American Idol show was sent packing after not negotiating successfully her compensation package. This is after the host/presenter was given a huge increase with other judges on the panel receiving higher packages.

I think if anyone was in Paula Abdul’s positions would petition for a higher contract package. The negotiations didn’t materialize positively for Abdul resulting in the execs cutting her from the panel. For those who have come to love Abdul over the years they are saddened by the outcome. I am upset that the execs could not have seen it fit to give Abdul a proper wage package to continue the show. After all, the show can well afford paying her what she’s really worth. Each week they announce the record number of votes that the contestants bring in. Where are these profits going? I do think it was right to give Seacrest such a high increase and not have enough to satisfy Paula Abdul. Are the execs sexists?

Maybe it’s time to move on for Abdul though. It may be a blessing in disguise. Whatever it is this was not fair treatment of a judge that made the show what it has become today. There is no doubt in our minds that the American Idol show is successful and they produce successful artistes. People in organizations must be rewarded equally for their output and time invested. It is sad to see Paula Abdul go in this way. No one expected it. I just hope the show’s organizers will rethink their decision. If not, good luck AI and get a job soon Abdul.

Marketing for any business operating in today’s harsh business world isn’t easy. Getting the right campaign to the target market is a huge task. Hitting the nail on the head can be a massive gamble. Companies who use the services of marketing/advertising agencies most times are not in control of what the agencies produce. Somehow, companies even accept anything that the agency produces without contesting or even make suggestions to improve on the advertisement. It is sad when companies have to withdraw ads that offend a segment of the target market even sometimes offending the society. Advertisements are not only produced for the intended market. Because they are viewed in the mass media, extending the reach of the ad, the advert may be offensive. Companies however have a huge role in ensuring that the ads that the company has on television, radio, print etc are comfortable and not offensive.

Recently, KGB a company that answers questions that they receive by text messaging released an ad that some people find offensive. Some even want the ad to be pulled. The ad portrays black females in a salon getting their hair done. A female talent in the ad asked the other ‘What kind of hair is this?’ The response of the hairstylists says natural. The discussion there continues with the quest to find out what natural hair means by sending a text message to KBG for the answer.

From the advertising agency and company’s point of view they have achieved their objectives. They produced an ad reflecting the company’s proposition (product), and they used talents which reflected in some way their intended target audience. Success huh?

But the issue is bigger than that. The issue is the portrayal of black people. Culturally, the black race is known for their sense of humour, survival, hardworking attitude, breaking the law etc. Generally in advertisements the black talent would always deliver that punch line of a joke, or be seen eating unhealthy foods like chicken (not that chicken is bad). There are both positive and negative images that are embedded in ads today. These images can be offending; some can be flattering while others can be motivating.

There is certainly nothing wrong with the advertisement of this company. People will find issue with the ad that most of the actors were black. Normally, companies with a huge target market would show diversity in the ad to show that all races accept their product. This advertisement borderlines offensive because it appears to be saying that only black people wear weaves and emphasizes the fact that they cannot explain where it comes from. The believe that black people wear the most weaves may be a lie, but this ad does not make it appealing.

But how did we get here? There are issues within the black community and it is sad that this company is highlighting that flaw to sell their brand. Majority of people believe that black people use weave as a way to change who they really are. They use all the hair products and chemicals to look like someone else. Weaves do compliment and enhance a woman’s features. There is nothing wrong with wearing a weave. There might be a problem when weave identifies your race.

One’s allegiance to their country must not be compromised. The moment a citizen has breached this rule and decides to run for public office it should become an issue. Most countries have strong rules and opinions on this matter. It is understandably why, pledging allegiance to your country shows love for your country and where your priorities are even when the going gets tough.

Recently in Jamaica politicians were under fire and still are because some pledged allegiance to different sovereign states. Both the ruling government and the opposition have been at war to oust members of the house who have citizenship in other countries. The courts have ruled on the matter and have issued that elections be held in the constituencies that are in question. I believe politicians must prove without a doubt their allegiance and documents proving that they are citizens of that country. This must be done even if the minority wants to know.

obama1There is a budding debate now going on in some quarters of the United States of America where citizens are crying fowl over the authenticity of Obama’s candidacy and him being president. Even if you think that the president is an American citizen which most people still believe why the president won’t provide full proof that he is. He has provided a document that any thief can provide as his birth certificate which doesn’t count. He has not provided the real birth certificate, that authentic document. Political pundits like Lou Dobbs are putting pressure on the issue. It just won’t go away.

Viewers of CNN are even lobbying for Lou Dobbs to leave the network. It’s an issue huge on most blogs. The President of CNN was reported saying that this birth certificate is a non-issue and it’s a dead story since the President released his fake birth certificate. That is appalling coming from a man who should be encouraging his team to research issues that are topical and are of importance. What is also amazing is that people who are against Obama seems to come under pressure when it is a real complaint. The media is so in love and in bed with Obama that they are not questioning this issue. The way they treated McCain on this matter for him to prove he was an American citizen is mind boggling. Can we have some balance here? That is why I also believe that people have a problem with the FOX Network. Because they push the button on issues and apologize to no one for their reporting. I can see why CNN has slipped.

Dobbs

Dobbs

The interesting thing is if Lou Dobbs leaves CNN I am sure FOX will gobble him up and he will have a huge contract providing real news keeping our politicians honest with the top network.

All I want Obama to do is to prove he is a USA citizen. Prove it with the real document. Let us see the seal, the doctor, and the document in its entirety. No make shift document will not work. With the media in bed Obama I am not sure how far this issue will go.

I Love FOX NEWS

All my life I have always loved newscasts. I am intrigued by the delivery and how great anchors can adlib even without a teleprompter. I even thought about becoming a journalist when I was younger.

fox_news

Since I had access to cable networks and all that mess I have been in love with CNN. The whole gang of presenters I liked. At that time I would always dabble and watch some FOX and MSNBC. My least favourite was MSNBC, because I hated their production then.

Months ago, I decided I would keep a track of their ratings and I was shocked. All along I was hammered with CNN’s advertisement claiming which segments and times they were number one. Which when I researched was a lie. They were not the leaders at those times. I began to lose faith in them and watch as they became old fashioned in their style of presenting news. You saw the same things every hour, OLD NEWS.

The election campaign rolled along and boy I was interested. I was dubbed a politics ‘teh-teh-‘. I cannot tell you what means but I didn’t mind being called someone who was crazy about information and learning. In the election cycle I was a fan of Hillary. I wanted her to win the Democratic Nomination. I could not have favoured Obama who lacked experience and even with the many scandals that could have potentially ended his run, it didn’t because the media was in love with him and oh how he knows great marketing. I was upset because you would get a bias report and I thought at that time FOX NEWS presented a newscast that provided some balance.

I could not get why my friend would be upset when I tuned into FOX NEWS. Why would someone hate this network so much? I was confused. But, I have found out that many black Americans hate the network because they think the network is not pro-black. I however, do not get that feeling. Anytime I find FOX NEWS expressing hate towards people of different races then I will tune them out.

The ratings of the cable networks have been getting lots of attention these days because FOX NEWS who is hated for not providing ‘professional journalism’ is leading the market. I find it amazing that FOX NEWS is able to lead the market and do so convincingly. I love their presenters and the quality product.
Fox_&_FriendsFOX NEWS is doing their research unlike some other networks. We are currently in a market that is very open. People are not obligated to tune into one source for all information anymore. There are blogs, newspapers, different newscasts nationally, radio stations, social networks etc. People are tuning in now for the entertainment quality. They do not need to find out what Obama said last night. They are able to find it first in the media they choose to get that information. What they are going to come to your media house for commentary. Tell the public what heath care under the Obama administration means, etc. They want opinions, a discussion. FOX NEWS understands this and their programming are designed for this type of news.

To be honest, I have not been watching much of CNN these days. They have become boring, and insipid. I am crazy over FOX now. I love it. What makes me feel even better is that the network I depend on for information and quality commentary is the most watched network in the USA. That makes it even more special.

Rock on FOX NEWS.

With the recent death of Michael Jackson I am learning more about the individual he was. Born into a talent rich family the Jacksons he was destined for greatness. But with this status came many controversies that made MJ very stressful later on in life, some saying it may even have led to his death.

michael_jackson_died(2)

He was a major star, with many hits from his various albums produced.

I have sat down to watch some interviews he did and found myself amazed at how misunderstood this man was for the vast majority. His controversial court cases rocked his career for the worst making him an enemy and a paedophile. Even after his name was cleared by the court the accusations still follow him like a legacy.

His soft demeanour could be heard in his music. MJ was deeply concerned with his image. Close friends relate that he was a perfectionist taking years to produce an album and investing more than enough in music videos. The quality of his music speaks profoundly about the great artiste he was investing time and money in what he produced.

Although he is no longer with us, I can appreciate the media coverage journalists are providing giving an insight into his dark life. His music will forever live on. Michael Jackson remains the king of pop, a true icon.

Even those who hate MJ will agree with him on this point, he loved helping people. If this world would only love a little bit more the world would be a better place. Michael Jackson is a celebrity whom we have come to know from a distance. In an interview he claimed the song ‘Childhood’ was the autobiographical song of his career. If you really want to know this man listen this song, it may change your mind.

The outpouring of love from around the world shows the impact this man had on the people that enjoyed his music. Even now those who did not like his actions will come to realize this man is a real legend, a real icon, the king of Pop. Michael Jackson took the internet with him in his death. That’s the power he had.

Letterman and Palin

PALIN CABINETSarah Palin became popular in the 2008 Election in the US. Although not winning the election she has become a voice for the Republican Party. In the general election late night spoofs of her were flattering even damaging the image she tried to create. Recently David Letterman made offensive remarks about her and her 14-year old daughter. The show has come under fire from certain quarters who found the remarks out of line and reprehensible.

Letterman’s remark were below the line calling her image ‘slutty’ and made a joke alluding that a famous baseball star would have sex with Palin’s 14-year old daughter.

Isn’t it amazing that the media is not outraged against this man? Isn’t it amazing that the media isn’t reporting this issue? Isn’t it alarming that feminist groups are being quiet on this incident? Where are the apologies from CBS and David Letterman?

I am outraged; dissatisfied that even a joke like this was made. It is a sad day because those that are expected to speak out and be heard are kept numb to the point where it is deafening.

There is no way a man of this stature can make remarks alluding to violence against a 14-year old. When did we have to lower our standards that low to have laughter? But this was coming a long time ago. The media currently has no respect for Sarah Palin and this is evident as no one is supporting her. I think it is fair game to have a laugh about Sarah Palin. She has made her life a public one and this is a huge decision that an individual make when they put themselves in the media spotlight like this.

I sincerely believe that if Letterman had joked about the Obama’s underage girls like this, there would have been outrage; maybe even cancelling his show would be eminent. But, ‘little’ Sarah Palin from Alaska who seems to only make the news when the laugh is on her deserves no respect.

I must point out that ‘little’ Sarah Palin has led Alaska’s economy well. They are not bailing out any industry within their economy. They are investing more than ever in education, and developing their natural resources to sustain Alaskans. She is sending excess funds to Federal Government to bail out other states. The state even refused to accept bailout funds because they didn’t need it.

Why is this woman constantly attacked for her beliefs? I have no respect now for David Letterman, not that I did have any. What do you think about all this? Is it fair game to make rape jokes about a 14-year old?

Lessons from Susan Boyle

EU BRITAIN SINGING SENSATIONJust over a month ago the world was introduced to the woman who auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent. Traditionally it is believed that contestants on talent shows like these must be young, vibrant, talented and desperate for that huge break. So when this mature woman whose lifelong dream is to become a professional singer walks on stage you can imagine the shock.

The shock and the feeling of disrespect were expressed to her as she began to speak. The disrespect not only came from the audience but in some part expressed by the judges. For some, the nervousness of thousands of people in an audience would scare them. However, she had the courage to ignore all the forces that would hinder her to succeed and give the best rendition of the rehearsed song.

The huge task for most of us is to find our purpose, our rightful place and duties. Susan did not attempt poetry, she did singing. That is the hardest thing for most persons, to identify what you were cut out to do and pursue that which you were made to do. Individuals sometimes take years finding their purpose but when it is found no one can deny the talent. For most of us, we can find it easily but for some it might take a lifetime.

One factor that one cannot ignore is the determination and drive that one has to have. So many times, we let friends, families even our competition deny us of what is rightfully ours because of our fears. But fears only keep us from accomplishing our dreams. In this world, there are so many distractions, the critic whose joy is to tear down, the fans who keep encouraging and is expecting you to defy the odds.

But at the end of the day what decision did you make. Did you make a decision that will secure your future, or you made a decision to satisfy the critics who just want to see you go down. Susan Boyle may be the next huge star but of course there are lessons that can be learnt.

Preparing yourself for the next big thing may just be the opportunity that is coming your way. Of course being ready for the ride will determine how successful you will be. You may never win the race and Susan Boyle did not. She was placed second. Losing with grace and knowing you are a winner yourself makes you appealing and audiences will always respect and look up to stars who express this.

However, she clearly knew how to play the game and that just might have made her the bigger star after the game.
